A New FACE Model Emerges: Father-Student College Tours

What started out as a FACE/Seguin ISD middle school field trip to Seguin’s Texas Lutheran University in 2006 has evolved into an eight-year journey of success stories illustrating the power of engaging a father with his child in a real-world college setting.

At no cost to families, FACE has built on its AJ Briesemeiter MS pilot in Seguin designing interactive visits to 12 higher ed campuses in collaboration with the GEAR UP STAR Pre-College Outreach Center at Texas A&M University.

In 2011-2012, FACE conducted eight Father-Student College Tours, consolidating a college and career readiness model that has resulted in fathers from 18 middle and high school campuses helping their sons and daughters take the steps to graduate high school and complete college.

Each college tour experience involved father-student teams working hands-on and meeting face to face with professors and graduate students in the classroom on subjects ranging from STEM and Arts to Humanities and Renewable Energy. University staff provided materials and oriented fathers and students on the financial aid and admissions processes.

FACE is grateful for the enthusiastic cooperation of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas State University-San Marcos, Del Mar College East, Collegiate High School at Del Mar College, St. Mary’s University, Texas State Technical College-Harlingen, Texas State Technical College-Ingleside, Texas Lutheran University, UT Austin, UT Brownsville, UT San Antonio, and Coastal Bend College – Alice & Kingsville campuses.
