2013 marks FACE’s 10th year transforming father engagement. FACE has blazed models involving thousands of dads from 15 school districts, primarily in South Texas.
Like sprockets, FACE’s GEAR UP partnerships have also turned the cogs of Title I and 21st Century CLC programs. As a result, FACE has systemically engaged pipelines of communities of fathers and students, elementary through high school. What started out as a FACE/Seguin ISD middle school field trip to Seguin’s Texas Lutheran University in 2006 has evolved into an eight-year journey of success stories illustrating the power of engaging a father with his child in a real-world college setting.
At no cost to families, FACE has built on its AJ Briesemeiter MS pilot in Seguin designing interactive visits to 12 higher ed campuses in collaboration with the GEAR UP STAR Pre-College Outreach Center at Texas A&M University. Read More!
FACE’s grassroots models have become a resource in policy and research efforts to stem a major challenge in Texas and nationally— the relative invisibility of males in higher education. Dr. Victor Sáenz of UT Austin and Dr. Luis Ponjuan of Texas A&M University Bryan have been addressing the issue through their research and the launch of Project Mentoring to Achieve Latino Educational Success (MALES) with a symposium in 2011. Fathers and students involved in FACE programs have gained a whole new set of tools to help them become college and career ready –thanks to GenTX, a new campaign created by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).
In Fall 2012, FACE worked with Coastal Bend Partners for College & Career Readiness to implement the FACE GenTX Father Student College Readiness Campaign in four Coastal Bend region school districts. Read More!
José “Joe” Rodríguez, and grandson Kristopher Rodríguez, are founding members of the FACE Father-Student Leadership Team (FSLT) which launched in 2009 and has won two awards from the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) at two NationalGEAR UP conferences.
FACE tapped the most involved families from a FACE program in Alice, Texas. The FSLT has demonstrated the capacity of a few dads and middle or high school students to have an impact promoting a college-going culture within and beyond their families and communities. Read More!

For 10 years, FACE has partnered with River City Youth Foundation to host a citywide Father’s Parade & Fiesta in Austin. The goal of the event is to recognize the value of fathers and father role models in the schools, at home, and in the community. The annual Father’s Parade & Fiesta takes place a weekend before Father’s Day in southeast Austin’s Dove Springs, a community with the greatest educational and health challenges in the area. At the event, FACE conducts fun, engaging activities to teach dads how to bond with their kids and with other fathers in the community. The winners of a student father’s essay contest are also announced. Read More!
